Fort Collins Utilities to Decrease Fluoride Levels in Drinking Water

Posted on: May-11-2015

On May 12, Fort Collins Utilities’ Water Treatment Facility will decrease target fluoride levels in its drinking water to 0.7 milligrams per liter or parts per million (ppm) of water to align with recent recommendations from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The change in federal policy was prompted by strong evidence that no additional oral health protective benefit is available to those who consume higher fluoride levels in drinking water. More information can be found at http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2015pres/04/20150427a.html.

Since 1962, the government has advised public water systems to add fluoride to a level of 0.7 ppm to water for warmer climates and up to 1.2 ppm in cooler areas. The new standard is 0.7 ppm everywhere. Currently, Utilities’ drinking water fluoride target levels are 0.9-1.05 ppm. Utilities’ water supply generally has a naturally occurring background fluoride level of 0.15-0.25 ppm.

Fort Collins Utilities has managed fluoridation of its water supply since the 1950s. This will be the first time the target fluoride levels have been lowered in more than 50 years.
