Fort Collins Utilities Reports Best Electric System Reliability to Date

Posted on: Apr-22-2014

Throughout 2013, Fort Collins Utilities Light & Power customers experienced 99.9982 percent electric system reliability—the highest in 30 years.

Not only was system reliability at an all-time high in 2013, but when an outage did occur, its average duration was 75 percent shorter (an average of 9.58 minutes) than the other public power agencies who report reliability indices to the American Public Power Association. To better describe the impact of Light & Power’s numbers, the average Fort Collins customer would experience an outage every 3.3 years.

These reliability statistics are a direct reflection of the concern and dedication exhibited by Light & Power employees as they work to safely construct and operate the electric distribution system. Utilities employees work not only for the safety of the public, but also for the safety of their fellow employees.

Light & Power provides electricity to nearly 68,500 customers. The reliability measures are tracked using practices defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

Outage data is reviewed monthly and helps guide funding for continuous improvements, system additions and infrastructure replacement projects that support reliability. These efforts help ensure the citizens and businesses of our community receive world-class service while enjoying some of the lowest electric rates in the nation.
