Utilities Recognized as a Role Model for Publicly Owned Utilities

Posted on: Mar-18-2013

The Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) recently highlighted Fort Collins Utilities as a leader in energy efficiency programs in a new report, Energy Efficiency at Fort Collins Utilities: A Role Model for Publicly Owned Utilities. The report describes what steps Utilities has taken to gain this recognition, as well as the impacts and benefits its programs have had and additional clean energy initiatives.

“Fort Collins Utilities has demonstrated that a small publicly-owned utility can implement highly effective energy efficiency programs that benefit its customers,†said Howard Geller, executive director of SWEEP. “Other publicly-owned utilities in Colorado should replicate what this utility has done.â€

Utilities, in collaboration with Platte River Power Authority, implements a comprehensive set of programs to serve its residential, commercial and industrial customers. These programs provide support, technical assistance and rebates/incentives, which relate to every facet of energy use, including retrofits and remodels, new construction, equipment replacement, consumer products and behavior change.

Leading programs in terms of producing cost-effective energy savings include: 1) rebates for energy efficiency upgrades by businesses; 2) home energy reports; 3) rebates for purchase of ENERGY STAR appliances.

Customer savings from 2012 efficiency and conservation programs reached over 22,000,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) or 1.5 percent of Fort Collins’ annual electricity use. Electric savings from 2002-2012 efficiency programs will reduce customer utility bills by approximately $7 million dollars in 2013.

SWEEP is a public interest organization promoting greater energy efficiency in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
