Storm Drain Stenciling

Fort Collins's 3,000 storm drains channel rainwater -- and any debris or pollution in street gutters -- directly into the Poudre River or Spring Creek. Treatment plants do not purify the stormwater before it enters the waterways. Pollutants that travel down drains directly into these streams include:

  • soap from car washing;
  • oil and grease from car repairs;
  • fertilizers and pesticides from overzealous lawncare;
  • litter such as cigarette butts, cans and paint; and
  • unwanted household chemicals poured down the storm drain.

Storm drain stenciling is an educational, fun and interactive way to engage children and adults in preventing water pollution. Stenciled messages on a storm drain, such as "Dump no waste, Drains to Poudre," reminds neighbors and passerby that these drains lead directly to our water sources.

Contact Utilities at 970-221-6700 if your group of neighborhood is interested in stenciling storm drains.
