Natural Areas
  • New reservoirs to increase water supply
Partnerships were formed and the permitting process began for the eventual enlargement of Halligan and Seaman Reservoirs. The project will provide additional water supply and increased drought protection. In addition, the construction of the Pleasant Valley pipeline last year adds to the reliability of our water supply system.
  • Alternative fuels to help air quality
As part of its commitment to the use of cleaner burning fuels, the City constructed an alternative fuels station for its buses.
  • Soapstone Ranch
One of the most noteworthy environmental initiatives of last year was the purchase of the 12,500 acre Soapstone Ranch, located north of Fort Collins. Soapstone contains abundant plant and wildlife, an archaeological site, and it protects the ranching tradition of the area. The Natural Areas program, funded through a voter-approved tax initiative, helped leverage the purchase of Soapstone to secure an additional 55,000 acres of regional land protection known as the Laramie Foothills Project.
  • Most electrical wires underground
For years the City has been working to convert the overhead electrical system to an underground system, and the project was about 98 percent complete by the end of 2004.
  • Programs support the environment
The Refrigerator Recycling Program and expansion of the Wind Power Program as a source of cleaner energy helped the City and its residents support the environment.
