City of Fort Collins ImageAnnual Christmas Tree Recycling Program

The City of Fort Collins and Larimer County are once again sponsoring the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program, which is a free service for Fort Collins residents.

This year's program will run from December 26, 2013, through January 20, 2014.

Where can you recycle your Christmas tree in Fort Collins?

Recycle your post-holiday, undecorated Christmas trees from Dec. 26, 2013, through Jan. 20, 2014, at one of five designated drop-off locations. The Larimer County Landfill is the only site that will accept trees early -- starting December 20 -- and will take trees for an additional day, through January 21.

  • Edora Park, 1420 E. Stuart St. (Tennis court parking lot)
  • Larimer County Landfill, 5887 S. Taft Hill Road. Mon. - Sat., 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Rolland Moore Park, 2201 S. Shields St. (Southeast corner of the parking lot)
  • Fort Collins Streets Facility, 625 Ninth St. (Southwest corner of Vine and Lemay)
  • Wellington Recycling Drop-Off Site, (Corner of Sixth Street and Grant Avenue)

Why should you recycle your Christmas tree?

Recycling your tree saves valuable landfill space (and money on your trash bill), and trees ground into mulch provide good ground cover that reduces soil erosion, deters weed growth and conserves water in landscaping.

How do you recycle your Christmas tree?

To ensure recycling of Christmas trees without contamination issues, please remove all lights, string, wire, metal hooks, nails, ornaments, tinsel, fake snow and bags before taking trees to one of the drop-off locations.

Are Christmas tree vendors allowed to drop-off their unsold trees?

No. The City and County operate the tree recycling program for citizens to use. Unsold Christmas trees should be disposed of at the Larimer County Landfill, 5887 S. Taft Hill between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For landfill rate information, call (970) 498-5760.

Will the mulch from the ground up Christmas trees be available to the public?

Yes, the mulch will be available free to residents at the Larimer County Landfill sometime in the spring. Advertisements will be in the local newspaper at that time. You may also check the County website. Be sure to bring your own containers and shovels to load the mulch.
