Residents participating in the National Prescription Drug-Take-Back Day event turned in 993 pounds of unused, unneeded, and expired over-the-counter and prescription medications to the Fort Collins Police Services site on Saturday, April 27. This national event focuses attention to the issue of pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse and proper disposal methods.
Last September, over 488,395 pounds—244 tons—of prescription drugs were collected at sites operated by the DEA and their state and local law enforcement partners. When added to the collections from previous Take-Back events, more than 2 million pounds (1,018 tons) of prescription medications were removed from circulation.
Nationwide results for the April 27 event are still being tallied.
