Rolland Moore Park is located on South Shields Street between Prospect Road & Drake Road. Map of Rolland Moore Park (jpg)
Rolland Moore Community Park was established in 1983 and is a highly programmed parks with three soccer fields, one flag football field, four volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a trail system that acts as a commuter route, two shelters, eight tennis courts, and a four-plex softball complex. These provide many challenges when it comes to balancing environmental stewardship, and meeting the demands of the park user. Programmed sports leagues, classes and tournaments, from March until November means a very high use for most of the year. Fortunately, the park is also located adjacent to two City Natural Areas, and bordered partially by an irrigation ditch system that contribute to the wildlife corridors in the park.
The Parks department has displayed a strong commitment to our environmental programs. Rolland Moore is a great example of this commitment with it's Audubon Certified Cooperative Sanctuary Site designation. Some visable examples in achieving the Audubon designation are increased low maintenance turf areas, wildflower medians, "Solar Bee" pond aerator, and expanded wildlife habitat. The Park Division partnered with community volunteers; in particular, Eagle Scout Arthur Squassabia with Troop 286, and local Audubon Society member Lynne Hull. Both contributed to the research, planning, and installation of the bird garden, located northwest of the pond. As the bird garden shrub plantings mature, they will provide the sources of food and cover that makes a bird garden desirable habitat.
The Parks Department has been challenged with balancing the aesthetic look of a well groomed park and lowering the City's carbon footprint. There are several ways that the crews at Rolland Moore Park work to help accomplish this goal. There are designated "no-mow" areas, most of which coincide with the Audubon Santurary; offering receptacles that provide a way for the community to recycle when they're in the Park; and water management practices that maximize irrigation in the Park by using raw water and performing water audits to ensure the sprinkling system is operating efficiently.
The reward for being able to offer recreational programmed events and a beautiful Audubon Sacutary in one Park, are very satisfying for our City staff and the community as a whole.
