OEM Project Survey CD 1998-99 Project Overview

1998-99 OEM Survey of Projects CD

Project Overview and Goals

This project was developed to assist in reaching our goal of increasing public education and awareness about disaster preparedness and mitigation. Additionally, we wanted a vehicle with which to assist other new or potential Project Impact cities by outlining our first year in the program and the steps we took to develop our projects. We also wanted to pioneer a more interesting and entertaining way to furnish FEMA with a yearly update on the progress of Project Impact in Fort Collins.

The project is in the form of a PowerPoint presentation on a CD. We have used the presentation a number of times with great success as a supplement to an oral presentation. The many photographs included in the presentation seem to be of interest to the audiences and help them to focus on the presentation.

Design Specifications

This is our second PowerPoint presentation, the first being our popular "Fort Collins Flood History" CD. The comments we have received about both of our presentations lead us to believe that this is a highly successful method for education when used with a speaker, or in kiosk form as a stand-alone visual presentation. It also is an excellent method of archiving historical information because CDs are much more stable than the magnetic media previously used for this purpose.

Producing the CD is well within the capability of most cities today. Blank CDs cost less than $2 apiece now, and in bulk are even cheaper. The equipment required is:

  • Computer to run the software and the presentation
  • CD-R drive to burn the CD
  • Digital camera for photography
  • Scanner for digitizing existing photographs (may or may not be necessary)
  • Color InkJet printer to print the CD cover
  • Software for preparing the digital images
  • MS PowerPoint software
  • Optionally, a digital projector for use with larger groups
We have chosen to use our Project Impact community partner Blue Knight Graphics to produce our CD presentations as an alternative to doing them ourselves. This may be an option for other Project Impact communities to explore as well.
