Project Overview and Goals
The City of Fort Collins has long appreciated the importance of stream and precipitation gages to the overall flood mitigation effort. Since the 1997 flood, additional funding has become available which allows the City to expand its monitoring capabilities. This effort is part of the multi-level emergency notification system being developed and coordinates with the real time flood inundation mapping project.
The City of Fort Collins stream and precipitation system is a series of stream and precipitation gages strategically placed throughout the City, to be used primarily for emergency response purposes. However, the information received from these monitoring devices will be invaluable to future planning, development, and flood mitigation.
Design Specifications
The stream and precipitation gages transmit data via radio to base stations located at Fort Collins Utilities office and Fire Station #1. The radio telemetry makes the information available to Utilities and Emergency Services personnel in real time. The "Stormwatch" software used in conjunction with the system has the ablility to send pages when specific alarm thresholds are reached.
This network of gages will be expanded as future funding allows. As previously mentioned, the information from the gage network will also be used as input data to the real time flood inundation mapping system.
