Fort Collins Flood History Presentation Project Overview
Fort Collins Flood History Presentation CD

Project Overview and Goals

This project was developed to assist in reaching our goal of increasing public education and awareness about disaster preparedness and mitigation.

Back in 1999, Ann Azari (Mayor of Fort Collins at that time) contacted the OEM for assistance in developing a keynote message to be delivered to the 1999 National Flood Conference in Denver. We seized the opportunity to have our message of mitigation and preparedness taken directly to the insurance professionals who deal with the National Flood Insurance Program on a daily basis.

Our goal was first to assist former Mayor Azari in creating a meaningful and memorable presentation for the Flood Conference. Second, and more importantly, we wanted to develop an on-going program that we in the OEM could update as necessary and present to both professional and community groups, that would teach as well as entertain. Third, we wanted the program to be flexible so that it could be used by gifted speakers, such as former Mayor Azari, or used as a stand-alone kiosk presentation. This was especially important because we participate in public presentations at local shopping malls and other places several times a year to promote public awareness and safety education, and the kiosk format is very effective under those circumstances.

The result was the creation of a PowerPoint presentation which, when run in kiosk mode, lasts about 11½ minutes. The title of the presentation is, "A Brief History of Flooding in Fort Collins." The subject matter covers notable flooding events since 1864, when the settlement was known as "Camp Collins" and was forced by flooding of the Poudre River to relocate to present day Fort Collins. The presentation ends with mention of the recent flood of April 30, 1999. Also mentioned is the very successful mitigation effort at Creekside Park in 1990, which undoubtedly saved many lives during the catastrophic flood in July, 1997. The value of FEMA's Project Impact initiative to our overall efforts was also covered. The final presentation was copied to a CD for easy portablilty and use.
