Experience the World of Africa

Experience the World through members of the Fort Collins community who generously share their hereditary culture or those who have had the opportunity to study, to reside or to travel, provide a glimpse of ways of the world through art, music, food, dance, religion, traditions, history, geology and the influence of politics.

This September, Experience the World of Africa at the Fort Collins Senior Center, 1200 Raintree Drive. This region of the world is viewed as the “Cradle of Humankind” and is currently experiencing much political and social change. Amazing scenery, high mountains, jungles, volcanoes and the deepest lakes in the world are in this area. The land is still splitting and will rupture and break off in approximately 10 million years. This series is presented by the Global Village Museum and the City of Fort Collins.

Ongoing displays will be viewable at the Fort Collins Senior Center during our exploration of Africa including memorabilia, artifacts and art. Pick up your copy of the Africa themed book list at the Senior Center Front Desk and movie guides provided so that you can learn more about it.

Lunch and Lecture: Who and Why Did People Settle in East Africa Rift Valley.
John Roberts, retired State Department and World Traveler will share his vast knowledge of one of the most interesting and unusual parts of the world, the Rift Valley of Africa. He will talk about the unusual geologic facts that supported the aboriginal and migrating people.

Lunch and Lecture: Postcards from Burundi
William Timpson, professor, School of Education at CSU, has dedicated his life to the pursuit of world peace. He established the University of Ngozi in Northern Burundi, a country that has suffered from warfare, corruption and poor access to education. Timpson will share his extensive experiences.

Showcase: Africa Cradle of Humankind
The Smithsonian Natural History Museum houses many human fossils from Africa which is known as the Cradle of Humankind. The Museum will present a live interactive tour of their Human Origins exhibits. Participants will be able to ask questions of the tour guide.

Lunch and Lecture: Ugandan Experience
Carolyn Griebe has traveled to Uganda six times. Her latest trip lasted three months in which she taught women self-sufficiency, fitted people with glasses and dedicated wells 5 and 6 in the East African country. Hear her story and be amazed.

African Night
Experience drumming, dancing, crafts and exotic food from the East African Rift Valley with community members from the region. There will be a chance to participate in African drumming with the African Drum and Dance Collective of Fort Collins, enjoy professional photography by Marjorie Morningstar, and shop at the African Bazar.

Showcase: East African Art
The Smithsonian American Art Museum will present a live interactive tour of their East African Art exhibits and explain the differences in the origins and the sophistication of the tribal pieces. The participants will be able to ask questions.
