On Nov. 18 at approximately 1:23 a.m., Fort Collins Police officers were sent to the 1900 block of Mackinac Street, near Timberline Road and International Boulevard, on a report of an ATV driving loudly up and down the street. The ATV was reportedly ridden by a man and a woman.
As one officer was driving into the area, he came across an ATV stopped in the roadway in the 400 block of north Timberline Road. It was occupied by a man and a woman. The officer pulled alongside the ATV to speak with the operator. As the officer did so, the man operating the vehicle rapidly accelerated south on Timberline Road.
The ATV turned west onto International Boulevard and continued westbound at a high rate of speed. Near the entrance of Dry Creek subdivision, the ATV failed to negotiate a roundabout and rolled into the roundabout center median. Both of the ATV riders were ejected.
The operator of the ATV, Travis Ackerman, 29, of Fort Collins, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies. The passenger on the ATV was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital by ambulance where she was pronounced dead. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
One lane of International Boulevard leading into the Dry Creek subdivision was closed for about 11 hours while investigators processed the scene. Police believe both alcohol and speed contributed to the collision. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
The identity of the female passenger as well at the cause and manner of her death will be released by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.
Anyone with information about the collision, who has not already given a statement to police, is asked to contact Officer Drew Jurkofsky at 970-221-6555.
