The Fort Collins community has nearly achieved a significant goal – recycling or composting 50% of the waste generated. In the last two years, Fort Collins residents and businesses have recycled 47% and 42% of their waste and are closing in on the original 50% goal. When counting all the industrial recycling done by the City and breweries and others, our community is diverting 58% of our waste from the landfill! So what should be next for Fort Collins?

Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend the fifth and final “Community Conversation: Core Ideas for the Zero Waste Plan” on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the 215 N. Mason St. Community Room. During the event, consultants from Zero Waste Associates will present core waste reduction concepts included in the draft plan, which will be available to view at fcgov.com/zerowaste on Monday, October 7. An opportunity will also be provided for additional public comment, all of which will ultimately shape the Road to Zero Waste Plan’s final draft.

The City of Fort Collins has been engaging the community since June on the master planning process called “The Road to Zero Waste.” The City is asking Fort Collins businesses and residents for additional feedback on the core ideas – which are right for the community? Do some need to be changed?

Previous Community Conversations were filmed and are posted online at fcgov.com/zerowaste. Topics included reduce, reuse and recycling, as well as composting and waste-to-clean energy.
