A large National Trails Day volunteer project will be happening at Soapstone Prairie Natural Area on Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Although trails will be open, visitors should expect to encounter over 100 volunteers and trail construction. Visitors are requested to please have an alternate destination in mind in case the parking lot is full. To participate in the project, registration is required at http://www.rei.com/fortcollins
National Trails Day is a nation-wide celebration of America’s trail systems. Volunteer events such as this one highlight the valuable work that volunteers contribute in the maintenance of the U.S.A.’s trail systems. Volunteers will be working on a variety of trail maintenance projects to improve erosion control and trail sustainability at Soapstone Prairie Natural Area.
The event is co-sponsored by the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department, REI and Larimer County Conservation Corps. Backcountry Delicatessen is donating sandwiches for the celebration lunch. Due to a grant from REI, the Natural Areas Department is providing tools, gloves and a volunteer appreciation gift. The grant supports several public volunteer efforts such as National Trails Day.
