CityDocs, the City of Fort Collins' public records database, is now easier to use on mobile devices. Citizens interested in learning more about City transactions including contracts, policies and vendor information, can now access CityDocs on a variety of mobile devices, including tablets and smartphones. This redevelopment of CityDocs was made possible by using an open source tool developed by Twitter engineers called 'Bootstrap', which utilizes "responsive web design" to dynamically adapt the page layout for modern browsers. The City of Fort Collins is the first municipality to use responsive web design to provide mobile-friendly content in a public records system.
More Citizens Using Mobile Devices
The City of Fort Collins's website contains more than one million records dating back to 1889. Over the last few years, the use of mobile devices to access the City's site has steadily increased and now represents more than 15 percent of the total traffic to the site. This metric is consistent with the industry, where experts are predicting that by 2015 the majority of traffic over the Internet will be from mobile devices. In particular, the widespread adoption of tablets and smartphones have noticeably increased traffic to CityDocs. Visit CityDocs at: http://citydocs.fcgov.com.
City Council Meeting Agendas Available 24/7
City of Fort Collins website tracking data shows a significant peak in traffic in the days leading up to City Council meetings. Occasionally, planned network outages over the weekend conflicts with the City Council agenda downloads. In order to solve this inconvenience, another enhancement was implemented to improve access to these important documents. City Council agendas are now automatically backed up into Amazon's S3 cloud-based solution, ensuring 24/7 access from anywhere in the world. Tracking Technology Trends to Better Serve our Community
These enhancements are all part of an organizational-wide effort to provide world class service to citizens. The City's internal eGovernment team strives to accomplish this goal by evaluating and implementing emerging web technologies, using a standards-based approach to maximize accessibility. Leveraging free tools like Twitter's Bootstrap saves thousands of dollars of development time and helps to broaden support in a rapidly changing environment.
