Fort Collins Utilities customers who receive individualized Home Energy Reports collectively saved nearly $440,000, or more than 5.1 million kilowatt-hours (kWh), in 2011. This is a 25 percent increase in savings over 2010 results and exceeds expected 2011 results, Utilities today announced.

Since Utilities launched the Home Energy Report program in late 2009, customer energy savings total more than 9.4 million kWh. The program is delivered through a partnership with OPower, an industry leader in energy-efficiency and Smart Grid software. OPower works with more than 60 municipal utilities throughout the United States, including the City of Loveland.

Approximately 25,000 Fort Collins electric customers receive individualized reports to help identify how their home energy usage compares to that of 100 nearby homes with similar characteristics and energy sources.

“We’re quite pleased with the continuing reduction in electric use this program helps our customers achieve,” Brian Janonis, Utilities executive director, said. “The reports support Utilities’ systematic approach to achieving community goals as laid out in the Climate Plan and Energy Policy.”

The reports help customers understand their monthly home energy usage, track progress on how their homes’ usage changes over time, where they likely have opportunities to save and offer energy-efficiency tips specifically tied to a customer’s energy usage.

“Customer behavior is key to the success of the program,” Patty Bigner, customer and employee relations manager, pointed out. “Customers voluntarily adjust their energy use habits to conserve energy as a result of the reports.”

In Fort Collins, the program reached its highest percentage savings to date in May 2011 at 3.1 percent per customer.
Overall, Utilities customer savings have totaled more than $800,000 due to the conservation savings. Even after accounting for the cost of the program, which Platte River Power Authority, the City’s wholesale power supplier, helps offset, electric bills have been more than $300,000 lower for customers receiving the reports.

In 2011, that represents per-household savings of about 250 kWh, roughly equivalent to unplugging a spare mini-fridge for a year. The average Fort Collins household uses about 10,000 kWh per year.
