Clint Leach, Colorado State University Graduate Degree Program in Ecology,
Everyone is invited to bring a lunch and learn about current research in ecology. Three graduate students will share information on food webs, wetlands, and non-native plants in 15 minute blocks with plenty of time for questions. Wednesday, April 3, noon-1:30 p.m. City of Fort Collins Office Building, 215 North Mason, Community Room. Free! No registration required.
The presentation is sponsored by the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department and Colorado State University, Graduate Degree Program in Ecology.
Here’s the lineup:
Clint Leach will explore the tangle of food webs: who eats whom in a community? Only recently have ecologists really begun to untangle the often complex structure of these interactions. We will explore different aspects of food webs and how knowledge of their structures can inform our understanding of a community.
Andrea Borkenhagen will fill us in on wetlands: what are wetlands, how do they function. and what can you learn about the ones in your natural areas? Let’s put on our virtual rubber boots and dive into the saturated soils of our local wetlands. We’ll learn about specialized plants, their hydrological importance, nutrient cycling, and vibrant wildlife habitat.
Is it a weed? An exotic? An invasive? Courtney Gomola will let us know what these terms mean and how some plants affect our northern Colorado ecosystems. We’ll learn about non-native plants’ impacts on the habitat, the basics of invasive species ecology, and explore some theories on how these invaders are able to do what they do.
The presentation will be Wednesday, April 3, noon-1:30 p.m. at the City of Fort Collins Office Building, 215 North Mason Street, Community Room.
Free! No registration required.
