Bill Ritter, former Governor of Colorado, now serves as the Director of the Center for the New Energy Economy, housed at Colorado State University. The privately funded center, established in 2011, is a national policy center focused on building the new energy economy. Mr. Ritter, his wife Jeannie, and Maury Dobie, Assistant Director for the Center, toured the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery earlier this February.

Mr. Ritter, his wife Jeannie, and Ms. Dobie recently toured the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery to learn more about the Museum’s energy-related experiences, within the Museum’s exhibitions and incorporated into the building itself. Ms. Dobie noted “the Museum will be a wonderful teaching tool for visitors of all ages.” Cheryl Donaldson, Co-Director of the Museum agreed, adding, “The new Fort Collins Museum of Discovery will be a living laboratory for practice of the latest technologies for efficiently and effectively utilizing energy. With a goal of being one of only four museums in the world who are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certified, we are pleased to be able to showcase some of the local inventions that will help us achieve that.”

Mr. Ritter’s schedule takes him around the country and the world collecting examples of best practices to develop the center as a credible source of unbiased, science-based information, data and research. Mr. Ritter also convenes national and statewide discussions among policymakers, scientists, business, environmental organizations and others; facilitates collaboration among faculty members around critical research needs; represents the university in state, national and international discussions related to energy policy; and interacts with students as a teacher and mentor.

Colorado State University and northern Colorado are well-respected for their commitment to development and implementation of clean energy technologies. Home to FortZED (Fort Collins Zero Energy District), established in 2010 with a US Department of Energy grant and matching funds from local businesses, Fort Collins is uniquely positioned to be at the forefront of the nation’s new energy economy.

Working together with City of Fort Collins Utilities, local expertise from FortZED, the Center for the New Energy Economy and faculty members and researchers at Colorado State University, the Museum is looking forward to sharing creative energy development and utilization.
