On March 12 at about 3:45 p.m., Fort Collins Police went to the area of Magnolia Street and Mason Street after several citizens reported a man hit by a train.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train was traveling southbound through Old Town on the Mason Street railroad tracks. Witnesses reported seeing a man standing on the east side of the roadway watching the train travel by. A short time later, witnesses reported the man walked up to the moving train and was run over. The man died at the scene.
The identification of the man is not being released at this time pending notification of family. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release the cause and manner of death pending their investigation.
Mason Street was closed between Magnolia Street and Mulberry Street for approximately 2 ½ hours while investigators processed the scene. The train stopped near Swallow Road and McClelland Drive and blocked the intersection during the investigation.
Anyone with information about the collision, who has not already given a statement to police, is asked to call Officer Drew Jurkofsky at 970-221-6555.
