On Tuesday March 13 and Wednesday March 14 the Forestry Division will conduct a significant cottonwood tree removal and pruning project in the vicinity of the Avery House, 328 West Mountain Avenue. The row of cottonwoods by the Avery House are being removed or pruned to correct serious safety hazards. Public safety is the top priority for the Forestry Division and retaining three of these trees would compromise public safety. During the project Meldrum Street between LaPorte Avenue and Mountain Avenue will be closed. If weather impacts the project the work will be extended into Thursday and Friday.

The trees to be worked on are located in the parkway between the sidewalk and curb along the east side of Meldrum Street by the Avery House and the Carriage House. This row of mature cottonwoods has had large limb failures and one complete tree failure. Forestry conducted an aerial inspection and risk rating analysis on the four trees. This evaluation revealed significant structural defects in three of the cottonwoods that could not be mitigated. The trees to be removed include the two closest to Mountain Avenue and the north-most tree by the Carriage House. The third cottonwood north of Mountain Avenue is scheduled to be pruned. Routine pruning of other street trees in the block will also occur to the extent possible while the traffic control is in place. Replacement trees are scheduled to be planted.

The wood from the removed trees will be utilized. Most of the wood generated by the Forestry program is ground into mulch and used in City and School District operations. Small diameter wood is chipped at the project site. Large diameter logs are moved to an offsite location where most are ground into mulch. This program has diverted over 2,000 cubic yards of material from the landfill per year by converting it into a usable product.

Please contact the Forestry Division at 970.221.6660 for more information on this project.
