FORT COLLINS, CO – The City of Fort Collins Utilities today received a $15.4 million matching funds grant from the Department of Energy as part of the Federal Recovery Act. This funding will accelerate plans to implement Smart Grid technologies throughout the electric distribution system that serves the community.

Smart Grid, including Advanced Metering Infrastructure and other technologies, is an automated, widely distributed network. It allows two-way flow of electricity and information. By providing real-time electrical data, residents can better manage their energy use.

“The grant moves us further down the road to achieve our Smart Grid goals, part of which includes the installation of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure,” said Brian Janonis, Fort Collins Utilities Executive Director.

The grant also supports FortZED, the community’s zero-energy district.

If approved by City Council, the required matching funds will be provided by the Light and Power Utility.

“The Utilities is committed to minimizing the impact on customers’ electric rates,” said Steve Catanach, Light and Power Operations Manager.
