The City of Fort Collins announced that the Northside Aztlan Community Center earned gold level certification from the United States Green Building Council’s LEED rating system.

The certification of the Northside Aztlan Community Center further demonstrates the City of Fort Collins’ commitment to green building and environmental stewardship. The facility includes a number of notable green features and strategies including:
• Outdoor water savings of 52% - native and adapted plant species and high-efficiency irrigation systems
• Indoor water savings of 44% - efficient plumbing fixtures, such as dual flush toilets and low-flow faucets
• Energy savings of 31% - efficient building shell, HVAC, and lighting systems
• Diversion of 95% of the waste generated during construction.
• 17% recycled materials - recycled materials comprise more than 17% of the total cost of materials used
• 27% regional materials – materials acquired from within 500 miles comprise over 27% of the total cost of materials used
• Excellent indoor air quality
• Bike racks and spaces for carpools and vanpool parking
• Permanent open space at the site
• Heat reflective roofing to reduce building cooling costs
• Cut-off lighting to reduce nighttime light pollution
• Brownfield mitigation - The building site is a “Brownfield” where open burning of garbage and other debris occurred until the 1960s. Before construction of the new building, workers built an underground diversion wall in the bedrock to prevent contaminated substances from flowing into the river. Additionally, the site includes ground water control wells and sump pumps that keep contaminates from moving around the wall and towards the river. Water retrieved by the pumps is treated by an on-site filtration system.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the US Green Building Council’s green building rating system. In 2006, the City of Fort Collins passed a resolution stating that all future City-owned buildings would meet LEED Gold certification. Fort Collins was the third City in the nation to set such a high standard.

The Northside Aztlan Community Center is a 48,739 sq. ft. multi-purpose recreation facility that replaced an existing 15,000 sq. ft. recreation center on the same site. The facility includes a 3-court gymnasium, elevated running track, fitness center, aerobics/dance studio, meeting rooms, classrooms, administrative support space, and more.
