Fort Collins Police Investigate Accidental Shooting

On July 30, at approximately 6:30 pm, Fort Collins Police Services received information that a male had been shot while standing near a car in Fossil Ridge Park located at 5833 South Lemay. When officers arrived they found a 19 year old male who had suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

During the field investigation officers located a .22 caliber pistol secreted in the bushes near the vehicle. Interviews at the scene revealed this was a unintentional shooting and the suspect denied knowing the gun was loaded when he shot the victim as he stood outside his car. The suspect’s name is being withheld because he is a 16 year old juvenile.

The victim was transported by ambulance from the scene with serious injuries. He is expected to survive. The victim’s name is Baltazar Martinez-Torres. The suspect was released to the HUB and charged with Second Degree Assault and Possession of a Handgun by a Juvenile.
