On June 6, just after midnight, an on-duty Fort Collins police officer in a marked police car collided with a bicyclist at a driveway entrance into the King Soopers store at 2602 S. Timberline Road.
The police officer, William Biberos, a 3-year veteran of Fort Collins Police Services, was leaving the King Soopers parking lot traveling west into the driveway approaching Timberline Road. The bicyclist, Cherrelle Cruz, 25, of Fort Collins, was riding northbound on the east sidewalk of Timberline Road. As Officer Biberos entered the crosswalk, he collided with a bicyclist and knocked her to the ground.
Ms. Cruz believed her injuries were minor yet as a precautionary measure she was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital (PVH) to be checked out. She was later transferred to Medical Center of the Rockies after it was determined she had sustained serious injuries when she fell onto her bicycle. She was not wearing a helmet and had no front light on her bicycle.
The driveway access was closed for approximately 6 ½ hours while traffic crash investigators processed the scene. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending. Police do not believe alcohol or speed contributed to the collision.
Following standard Fort Collins Police Services policy, Officer Biberos has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation into the crash continues.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Officer Drew Jurkofsky at (970) 221-6555.
