image for press release City of Fort Collins Recreation Department Reveals Senior Center Expansion Plans The plans for the highly anticipated expansion of the Fort Collins Senior Center were revealed May 16th during a public meeting at the Senior Center. Fort Collins’ firm The Neenan Company has been selected as the architect and contractor for the 17,000-sq.-foot addition to the 40,000-sq.-foot facility. The project is set to break ground October 2013 and is scheduled to be completed summer 2014. New amenities include: a cardio fitness room, wellness center, dance and exercise studios, multipurpose education rooms, community gathering place, additional storage, additional parking spaces, and ability to expand on the property in the future.

A 2005 citizen-approved “Building on Basics” sales tax will provide $5.1 million towards the expansion. The Senior Center Expansion Committee, a citizen-led 501C3 formed in 2007, is attempting to raise an additional $1 million for the project. The City of Fort Collins Recreation Department has contributed $500,000 and the Expansion Committee has raised $125,000 bringing the total raised $625,000. On May 16 the committee launched the final phase of the fundraiser; “Engage in Aging.” This final phase is attempting to raise $375,000 by October 31, 2013. The committee is focusing fundraising efforts on private donors, local businesses, and foundations.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for the seniors in this community,” said John Pfeiffenberger, Community Campaign Chair for the Expansion Committee. “Many people have been working for nearly a decade to first get the sales tax approved and then plan for this day.”

“The nationally accredited senior center is an award-winning and well-used facility, but the demand for services continues to grow,” he added. The population of those over 65 will increase by 140% in the next 20 years and the Senior Center must expand to meet the needs of our aging population.
