Fort Collins police have heard from two of out-of-state residents about a scam artist targeting seniors. During each event, a caller reports that the victim’s family member has been arrested for various charges and is being held by the Fort Collins Police. The caller identifies himself as a Fort Collins Police Officer and the victim inadvertently identifies the family member by name and the scam artist confirms the identity. The caller informs the victim that their family member needs bail money in order to be released and directs the victim to send a money gram.
Citizens are reminded that officers do not solicit funds to be distributed by Money Gram or other wired fund services. Please be cautious about releasing any personal information over the phone. If you are in doubt, ask for a call back number or contact the named law enforcement agency to inquire about the status of an arrested party.
