On April 16 at 2:13 p.m., Fort Collins police went to the intersection of Shields Street and Horsetooth Road after witnesses reported a child was hit by a car.
The child, Maryam Aboellail, 11, of Fort Collins, was riding her bicycle with her brother. They crossed Horsetooth Road, using the west crosswalk, riding from the south side of the road to the north. Aboellail’s brother was riding ahead of her when the traffic light for westbound Horsetooth Road turned green.
A 1997 Ford truck, driven by Christopher Engels, 29, of Livermore, was in the left lane of westbound Horsetooth Road. A 2011 Toyota Prius, driven by Ann Molison, 73, of Fort Collins, was in the right lane next to the truck. Engels and Molison saw Aboellail’s brother cross the road and began driving west on Horsetooth Road.
As Engels approached the west crosswalk, he saw Aboellail crossing north and applied his brakes. The front of the truck collided with the cyclist. The cyclist was knocked to the ground and continued moving northwest when the front of the Prius collided with the cyclist and drug her a short distance before stopping.
Aboellail suffered serious injuries and was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies. She was wearing a helmet. Neither driver was injured.
The intersection of Shields Street and Horsetooth Road was partially closed for approximately 3 hours while investigators processed the scene. Police do not believe speed, alcohol or driver distraction contributed to the collision. The investigation is continuing.
Anyone with information about the collision, who has not already given a statement to police, is asked to call Officer Drew Jurkofsky at 970-221-6555.
