Year-round bicycling in south Fort Collins just got easier thanks to new bike lanes on South College Avenue between Carpenter and Harmony Roads. The three mile stretch of newly designated bike lanes did not require road reconstruction.

Prior to designated lanes, bicyclists were forced to ride on the shoulder of South College Avenue. Also, there was no way to access Fossil Creek Trail from College Avenue. A new ramp connects South College with the Fossil Creek Trail, which connects to Mason Trail on the west side of College. DK Kemp, the City Bicycle Coordinator states, "The improvements along South College are another example of our City's dedication to recognizing and supporting all modes of transportation."

This was a joint project between the City of Fort Collins and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Funding for the bike lane installation came from the Northern Front Range Metropolitan Planning Organization, CDOT, and the City of Fort Collins’ Capital Project budget. Numerous public meetings were held in 2004-2005, where the Engineering Department received suggestions and feedback from local businesses and residents on the proposed bike lane installation project. Installation of the bike lanes begin in July 2008.

“Shared lane markings” dot the new bike lanes alerting bicyclist and motorist that at times the bike lane is shared by both modes. The markings are an image of a bicycle and chevron stripes.
