June 6-Opening Reception for Poor of Me, Good of Dog: The May Wilkins Collection
Explore the newest museum exhibit while enjoying the sounds of the Colorado Swing Swingtet, a smaller version of the Fort Jazz Big Band. The Swingtet highlights the exciting music of the 1940's including Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Cole Porter, and Frank Sinatra.
May Wilkins moved to Fort Collins with her husband, newspaper editor Don Wilkins, in 1937 and lived here for over 50 years. Her extensive donation to the Museum includes hundreds of letters, newspaper clippings, and photographs; plus her personal collection of dolls and toys. Poor of Me, Good of Dog: The May Wilkins Collection uses this rich legacy to present May Wilkins' life and to examine her first person perspective on personal, community, and world events in the second half of the 20th century.
August 1-Brazilian Beats
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art/dance that blends spins, turns, precisely-aimed kicks, evasive defense moves, and breathtaking acrobatics into a rich fabric of motion, percussion, and song. Come see the captivating performance of Capoeira Luanda Denver.
Boulder-based Brazilian band, Sambadende, will perform a combination of powerful drumming and soulful singing. Samba reggae, samba enredo, samba antiga (pagode), capoeira music, and afoxé, brings the heat of Brazil to Fort Collins.
The Discovery Science Center will have activities for children that explore the movement of the human body.
September 5-Colorado Songline
Creative Movement for Kids presents Colorado Songline. Children ages 4-13 will dance, narrate, and play instruments as they adapt a traditional Aboriginal tale to a creation story about Colorado and the Cache la Poudre River. Four local musicians will play live, original music composed for this imaginative show. Following the performance, join us for some interactive movement, music and art with all of the cast members!
