Maceo Parker

Saxophonist Maceo Parker embodies the legacy of soul and funk music like no other can. In the 1960s and 1970s, Maceo helped pioneer the sound of the genre as a key member of James Brown's band -at the height of their collaborative powers, it was difficult to tell where the genius of one ended and the other began. Following collaborations with funk icons George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, Maceo has gone on to establish a solo career that embraces not only that seminal funk sound but also jazz, R&B and more.

On his latest recording, Maceo revisits the classics backed by the WDR Big Band on a live album, Soul Classics, a collection of some of the most enduring songs in the vast canon of American soul music from James Brown, to Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and other luminaries. As Maceo says, "Listeners are going to hear some very familiar songs in an entirely new way, and in the process, they're going to rediscover just how great the material really is."
