Come Home for the Holidays

If you will be staying in the area over the holidays, or have family and friends coming here from out of town, don’t miss “No Place Like Home” in the Lincoln Center art galleries showing now through January 11, 2014. This statewide juried exhibition was created to present Colorado ‘insiders’ views from all corners of the state. It’s also a great place to bring your holiday guests to share the beauty of our state. After multiple seasons of fire and floods, we felt it was time to celebrate the environment and experiences that make us call Colorado home. The artworks for the show were selected by Guest Juror Cecily Cullen, Creative Director for the Center for Visual Art in Denver. Reflecting on her choices for the show, she states, “For those of us that call Colorado home, our individual relationships with the mountains, prairie, city and the oft-revered light all are colored by our personal filters, tinted and scratched from individual histories, passions, broken hearts. These experiences are what make a place home.” See if you can find the painting, photograph, drawing or print that speaks to you, echoing your own reasons for calling Colorado “home.”

Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays, noon – 6:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed Sundays and Mondays, and is open for most evening theatre performances. Admission is free.

A Thrill Ride of “Mahlerian” Proportions

On Saturday, February 1, 2014 the Fort Collins Symphony will leave the audience breathless when it presents Magnificent Mahler. No other composer combines visceral power, depth of emotion, and brilliant orchestral color as does Gustav Mahler. Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. is a testament to perfectionism – a work that was revised for almost every performance he conducted. His musical message can only be rendered by outstanding musicians who are willing to give a superhuman effort and move to the greatest heights of ensemble performance.

Mahler returns for the first time to the renovated Lincoln Center stage. No other composer embodies the extremes of human emotion in his music than Gustav Mahler. His brilliant manipulation of orchestra sound is only outdone by his demonstration of his inner turmoil—from love to death. Included in this evening is perhaps his most famous piece of orchestral expression: the Adagietto movement; a love letter to his wife.

If you crave big brass, lush strings, sassy woodwinds, and percussion punctuation, this concert is for you. No other composer puts an orchestra through its paces like this one! An unforgettable composer creates an unforgettable evening. Be prepared for a thrill ride of “Mahlerian” proportions! .
