What is that Funky Thing?
There is a new piece of artwork on the south façade of the Lincoln Center. Perhaps you’ve driven by on Mulberry Street and wondered, “What is that funky thing?”

Exactly what it is is a 22 foot high and 34 foot wide sculpture bolted directly to the south side of the Performance Theatre wall. A creation of artist Barbara Baer titled “Becoming,” it’s made up of 14 free-form pieces of white painted steel. Some of the sculptural forms bolt directly to the building surface, others curl off the brick wall or fold away from it and some even reach above the roofline. By playing with positive and negative space, the design uses the existing wall itself to create some of the shapes.

Barbara Baer states, “The designed artwork illustrates the process of making and creating art within its scattering of cut shapes.”

Theses whimsical shapes are meant to visually represent the dynamic activities that go on inside the center and how things are constantly changing. One thing is always becoming something else.

By day, the white color is in strong contrast to the darker brick, and by night the forms will be illuminated with a color wash from multicolored lights across the surfaces.
