Art Gallery Docent/Visual Arts Volunteer

Do you have a passion for art? Are you curious about how art is made, and what it means? Can you convey your enthusiasm for art to people of all ages? If you've answered yes to these questions, you might consider becoming a volunteer Gallery Docent for the Lincoln Center.

Docents assist our gallery visitors in appreciating the exhibitions featured in the Lincoln Center Art Galleries. They also help to keep the gallery and artwork safe and secure. The Lincoln Center will present approximately 9-12 exhibition periods each year in two gallery spaces. With each new exhibition, Lincoln Center staff will share information about the artists and artworks with our docents. Docents will become familiar with how exhibits are installed, meet some of the exhibiting artists in person, learn about art history and the artworks on display, and how to spark interest and appreciation for the art with visitors from Kindergarteners to senior citizens.

Docents must be able to make a one year commitment to this volunteer position. Most docent hours will be during evenings and weekends when performances and events are scheduled for the theaters and conference rooms. Docents will be scheduled about an hour before performances through intermission - approximately 2 hours. Other times will include 2-hour blocks on Saturdays, between noon and 6 p.m., and weekdays if school tours or conference events are scheduled.

The various trainings and gallery work will require the following commitments:

  • Annual Docent Orientation: Friday, July 8, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (tentative date and time)
  • Exhibition Trainings: 2-hour meetings, 1 to 2 days a month
  • Docent Service: Minimum of one 2-hour commitment each month, typically weekends and/or evenings.

For more information, please call Jeanne Shoaff, Gallery Coordinator, at 416-2737.
