Phase II of the Harmony-Ziegler Improvement Project (HZIP) is underway at the intersection of Horsetooth Road and Ziegler Road. A roundabout is being installed at the intersection and a quarter mile stretch of Ziegler Road is being widened.
The entire project will take approximately four months to complete. Initially, lanes will not be closed. Some lane shifts and slower traffic flow should be expected on those sections of Horsetooth and Ziegler. Naranjo Civil Constructors is the contracting firm on the project.
Starting in early June, a portion of eastbound Horsetooth Road between Ashmont and Ziegler will be closed to allow for construction of the second phase of the roundabout. Residents and commuters will need to find alternative routes; there will be signs on site for detour routes. Traffic will be allowed to travel north on Ziegler, then will have to turn west on to Horsetooth. Full closures of Ziegler north of Horsetooth remain as well as Horsetooth east of Ziegler.
HZIP is a $33 million construction project that Bayer Properties, developers of Front Range Village, has helped fund in anticipation of the lifestyle center's summer 2008 opening. Phase I of HZIP was completed between July and November 2007.
Bayer Properties and the Front Range Village Development were required to make improvements to the Horsetooth/Ziegler Intersection based on the additional traffic that would be traveling through the intersection as a result of their development.
Based on the unusual pattern of traffic through the intersection where the west and south legs of the intersection see the majority of the traffic, a roundabout was determined to be the best solution to mitigate congestion and improve the intersection for the post-development conditions.
Construction team members ask bicyclist and autos to drive safely through the construction zone.
