Green a Home

People spend approximately 90% of their time indoors; much of it in their homes.

The City of Fort Collins’ Green Building Program supports a more ecologically sound approach to building practices for new homes and reductions in energy and water consumption for new and existing homes. Construction, on–going maintenance and month–to–month energy and water use by homes have a tremendous impact on our natural resources and surrounding environment.

Good News: While the typical Fort Collins family spends more than $1,100 a year on home utility bills, it is also common to cut expenses by up to 30% by greening your home.

Benefits of Greening Your Home

  • Save money: green homes have lower electricity, natural gas and water bills month after month for years to come.
  • Better comfort: green homes are more comfortable and have better indoor air quality.
  • Higher value: green homes show results that have value in the marketplace. Your home could bring a higher price when you sell.
  • More sustainable: green homes reduce the impacts on consumption of materials, energy and water.
