The FC Bikies event planned for Monday, December 15th has been postponed. Our bicycling community is still reeling from the latest tragic accident involving Erica Forney. On one hand, our community recognizes the great strides that Fort Collins has made to make our City bike friendly, yet on the other, we are upset with the latest cycling fatalities this year.
The award ceremony was planned prior to the latest fatality and there has been much discussion in the way of either postponing the event or continuing with the event as planned. Proponents for the event feel that we should not live in the shadows of these tragic events and that we must use the awards event as another avenue to recognize both our deficiencies and accomplishments as a community, while understanding that we still have much work to do. Others feel that this is not the time to recognize an esteemed award placed on our community as it is too close to the latest cycling death that has taken place.
To be respectful and empathetic to some of our bike community members' feelings as well as to show solidarity as a bicycling community we are going to postpone the awards event. There was a fine line drawn with what the best decision should be regarding this event. After much more consideration, the decision to cancel the event at this time seems best. I realize that there will be other times to recognize the great things we are doing as a bike community and it is also obvious that there is much work still to do.
We have rescheduled this event to take place on April 29th 2009 at the "Resources for Bicycling" event at a new venue called the Drake Center at 802 W. Drake Rd. I hope you all can attend.
