Fort Collins Utilities’ Green Energy Program

Green Energy costs one cent per kWh, plus PILOTS. It is sold in blocks of 500 kWh, 1,000 kWh or 100% of electricity usage for residential customers; and in blocks of 2,500 kWh or 100% of electricity usage for non-residential customers. Customers are asked to sign a one-year agreement when signing up. The program requires a 30-day termination process. The product consists of the following new renewable resources averaged annually. Fort Collins Utilities will report to you annually the actual resource mix of the green power purchased during the preceding year.

ENERGY RESOURCES Projected Power Mix1 Generation Location
Eligible New Renewable2 100%
Wind 83% Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Wyoming
Landfill Gas 17% Idaho
TOTAL 100%

The mix above represents the resource makeup of the renewable electricity you may receive from Fort Collins Utilities. The remainder of your electricity contains the following mix of electricity resources: coal (71.5%), Hydro (19.5%), renewables (4.1%), natural gas (2.5%) and other (2.4%). The 4.1% renewables reflects the renewables called for by Fort Collins’ Energy Policy.

Each of the above energy resources includes renewable energy certificates (RECs) that have been purchased in support of that type of resource. With the purchase of RECs, you are buying the renewable attributes (i.e. environmental benefits) of a specific amount and type of renewable energy generation. The purchase of RECs helps offset conventional electricity generation in the region where the renewable generator is located. The purchase also helps build a market for renewable electricity and may have other local and global environmental benefits, including reducing global emissions and regional air pollution. Fort Collins Utilities’ Green Energy Program is certified by Green-e Energy, which annually verifies Fort Collins’ purchase and use of these RECs toward the program. For more information, visit www.green-e.org.

The average home in the United States uses 900 kWh per month.

1 These figures reflect the power that we expect to generate and/or have contracted to provide. Actual figures may vary according to resource availability. We will annually report to you the actual resource mix of the electricity you purchased during the preceding year.

2 New Renewables are generation facilities in operation on or after January 1, 1997.
