Cities for Climate Protection Campaign
The Cities for Climate Protection is a campaign that seeks to engage municipalities around the world in climate change abatement policy. The campaign's goals are to:
- Strengthen local commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
- Develop and disseminate tools that increase local capacity and enhance strategies for energy efficiency;
- Promote best practices to reduce energy use and solid waste in buildings and transportation; and
- Provide a collective voice for municipalities internationally.
The campaign is a project of the ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), a membership organization of local governments and their associations. The Council is dedicated to building local government capacity worldwide to support both local and global environmental protection and sustainable development activities at the urban level.
By joining the campaign, the City of Fort Collins committed to
- Conduct a baseline emissions inventory and forecast
- Adopt an emissions reduction target
- Develop a Local Climate Action Plan
- Implement policies and measures
- Monitor and verify results
