Industry Clusters

Our community has big city ideas and small town relationships. We have a thriving private sector based on 21st century industries, and a top tier research institution to support it. We are proud of our historic past, natural wonders, and engaged community. Innovation occurs across industry sectors in Fort Collins. Craft brewers, bioscience, software, hardware, and clean energy companies contribute ideas, inventions, and products that shape our local economy.

2016 Support Fund Application

The City of Fort Collins Economic Health Office is excited to announce the release of our 2016 Cluster Fund grant application. The Economic Health Office looks to partner with targeted local industry clusters and regional sectors, which advance the economic vitality of our community. Industry clusters are geographic concentrations of interconnected companies, specialized suppliers, service providers, and associated institutions in a particular field that enhance productivity through collaboration. The City follows the triple helix approach (university, industry, government) for innovative growth, and allocates resources towards a number of local efforts.

Through the Budgeting for Outcomes process and the Keep Fort Collins Great Enhancement, $400,000 was allocated by Council in the City’s 2015-2016 budget for support of the Targeted Industry Clusters. In total, the City has $175,000 available for allocation each year,  and received $377,000 in funding requests in 2015. An additional $25,000 was reserved for the purchase of Board seats and programmatic support.

Applications go through (3) rounds of evaluation, including an initial review period, committee deliberations and recommended funding level, and an executive approval. The internal committee consisted of representatives from Social Sustainability, Environmental Services, Finance, the City Manager’s Office, and Economic Health. Eligible businesses/clusters had to be based in Fort Collins, or partnered with a local entity, with priority given to proposals that include a collaboration of triple helix partners to leverage resources and expertise. Applicants are also tasked with establishing a minimum ratio of 1:1 in public to private funding.
