The City of Fort Collins continues to partner with Larimer County on workforce development issues. One key aspect of this partnership is the City’s participation in the Workforce Investment Board (WIB). The WIB went through a major reorganization during 2010, which included a refocusing of efforts on three key business sectors, including energy, technology, and healthcare. In addition, the WIB sponsors a Youth Council.
Recently, the WIB received grant funding to provide training scholarships to existing and emerging energy companies. The grant funding provides for 29 Energy Scholarships to offset the cost of certification or education to meet the demand of renewable and energy efficient employers. The scholarships, worth approximately $3,000 per employee, are intended to help unemployed individuals, individuals seeking pathways out of poverty, veterans, and individuals needing updated training.
The WIB Youth Council recently attended the Adams County Career Expo for 8th Graders. The expo provided an opportunity for youth to explore a variety of careers and gain an understanding about employment opportunities after completing their education. The WIB Youth Council has begun to evaluate creating a similar program in Larimer County. More information will be forthcoming. Learn more about these programs at the Larimer County Workforce Investment Board website.
