Despite conservative budget projections and initiatives, the City’s financial health has indeed been hit by the ongoing recession. We are projecting decreases in our sales and use tax collections this year and do not expect this to turn around quickly. Sales and use taxes make up 60% of the City’s general fund revenue. Some of the proactive steps we’ve taken include a hiring freeze on all but essential positions, delaying major expenditures, and we’re aggressively searching for additional efficiencies.
Even with these efforts, City services will be impacted. Engaging residents in the conversation about what services this community wants and needs and what services we are willing to pay for, is a top priority.
The public is invited to attend a Budget Workshop to discuss the City’s 2010 & 2011 Budget priorities on Wednesday, May 13 from 6-8 p.m. at the Drake Centre, 802 W. Drake Rd. This is the first of many opportunities to provide input; follow the budgeting process online fcgov.com/budget.
