Priority Affordable Housing Needs and Strategies Report - Ken Waido,
This document is the first step in updating the City's Priority Affordable Housing Needs and Strategies Report. This study identifies the supply and demand for affordable housing by various income levels. The Affordable Housing Board and the CDBG Commission will use this data to develop a strategic plan for addressing the affordable housing needs, including the utilization of existing and expected financial resources. The strategic plan will be completed and available for public review by the end of the year. Once completed, the strategic plan will form the basis for the Consolidated Housing & Community Development Plan, a document required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development for a city to remain eligible for its entitlement grant programs.

City Gets High Marks from HUD and Ranks First in Leveraging Funds
The City of Fort Collins recently received glowing marks in a review by the federal department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Annual Community Assessment Summary measures how well communities use federal dollars for affordable housing and human services activities. Fort Collins met or exceeded performance standards in all categories.

The City helped with several housing projects. Efforts included helping income-qualified, first-time home buyers, developing or preserving affordable housing, and pitching in on a variety of housing services for citizens who are struggling. Fort Collins also assisted nearly two dozen community non-profit agencies with everything from childcare scholarships to meals for the homebound elderly.

HUD ranked Fort Collins 1st in Colorado for its leveraging of other dollars with federal funds. Fort Collins had an extremely high ratio of 29:1 for its Community Development Block Grant monies. “In this economy, it’s important to ‘grow’ money for our communities,” noted Joe Frank, Advance Planning Director. “This review provides concrete evidence that Fort Collins gets great bang out of its affordable housing and human services bucks.” The City was also commended for making strides in addressing barriers to fair housing for its community members.

Volunteers of America Honors City with Award for Excellence in Housing, Meals & More
Because of a partnership between the Volunteers of America (VOA) and the City of Fort Collins, 250 low-income seniors did not go hungry. Because the City offers VOA more support and guidance than any other funder in Northern Colorado, 27,000 meals were served to those in need. And because the City’s contributions to VOA "exemplify the spirit of civil service," VOA has honored the City of Fort Collins with its “Excellence in Government” Award. "Can I Be Your Neighbor?" Affordable Housing Posters Reach 26 Organizations in 18 States!
In 2004, to continue efforts to put a face on local affordable housing issues, our Northern Colorado cooperative launched the "Can I Be Your Neighbor?" poster campaign. This public awareness effort builds on the 2002 "Faces and Places of Affordable Housing" campaign. We cannot thank enough all those involved who made this campaign stretch from California to Massachusetts! The National and Local Boards of Realtors covered the printing costs, 4 citizens volunteered to pose for the photos, and the City's Affordable Housing staff designed and distributed.
