Bob Hewett was selected in place of his son, Ryan Hewett, who passed away on February 7, 2001. Ryan inspired others to endure and love unconditionally, despite being born blind with cerebral palsy. When Ryan was born, the doctors told the family to love him as much as they could, especially since he only had a few months to live. Due to Ryan's presence, everybody saw the beauty in life that otherwise, without Ryan, they never would have seen. Ryan fought hard for 3 ½ years, enduring many surgeries and extended hospital stays. The inspiration other people receive from Bob and his family is really "the inspiration of Ryan living" through them. "Heaven is a brighter place because of Ryan." When asked what carrying the torch means to him, Bob replies, "I'm honored to take these few steps in hopes that others can find strength in their lives, just as my son gave me strength in mine. To be a part of the Olympic experience is a dream."
